We’re only a couple of months into 2020 yet there’s already a plethora of emerging beauty trends shaping the new decade. We’ve sifted through the best ones and here are our top four to look out for – and invest in.
Go Bold
Brightly coloured nails are back for spring as are different nail shapes and textures. Head Therapist Jen from the Bruntsfield salon explains: “When it comes to colour, deep blue is set to be big – with pantone naming blue the colour of the year. We’ll see all shades of blue making a big impression in fashion and we love Midnight Swim from Shellac on our nails. We’ll also see more oval nail shapes to lengthen the nail bed and these are a nice alternative to the heavily popular square and squoval shapes. And lastly, the French has been revamped for 2020. Instead of the traditional white we’ll see funky bright shades like red and coral coming into spring/summer along with glitter ombre tips.”
More is More
Multi-faceted and hybrid products are set to dominate this year across both makeup and skincare. Priori Mineral Skincare SPF 25 (£36) is a firm Zen favourite for its serious skincare benefits plus dewy makeup finish. “This is a stunning mineral skincare powder that provides full foundation coverage with 30 anti-oxidants and broad spectrum protect against UVA and UVB rays,” explains Senior Therapist Lauren from Hanover Street. “It also moisturises the skin too. Plus, because it’s talc-free, there’s no powder-like dry texture and instead leaves skin looking radiant and dewy. It also works to blur imperfections and evens out skin tone.”
Fresh skin
There’s a huge focus on treating your skin well…something here at Zen we’ve always advocated. It’s all about that insta-filter skin that doesn’t need to be hidden in makeup and, thankfully, it’s easier to achieve than you’d think. “I cannot stress enough the benefits of a regular professional facial, customised to your skin’s individual needs,” reveals Jen. “Peels are also transformational when it comes to glowing skin.” In between professional facials and peels, Jen recommends Murad Replenishing Multi-Acid Peel (£48). “It’s quick and easy to apply – just swipe over the skin with a cotton pad at night for a dewy glow the next day. It contains gentle acids to remove surface dead skin along with holy basil which is rich in anti-oxidants, and omega rich oils to nourish and strengthen the skin for that vibrant, insta-worthy complexion. It leaves the skin with a dewy finish and perfect for bare faced selfies.”
Sheet Masks
Everyone’s doing it, everyone’s Gram’ing about it. And there’s good reason for, invest in a good sheet mask, and you’ll reap the beauty rewards for weeks after. “The Murad Hydro-Glow Aqua Peel- 4 pack (£40) is a fantastic sheet mask,” admits Lauren. “They come in 2 parts: the first contains 2 glycolic swabs soaked in a gentle glycolic acid solution to visibly smooth fine lines and wrinkles; this is followed by a deeply hydrating sheet mask to infuse the skin with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to plump and rejuvenate. These are perfect for when you can’t make it into the salon for a facial and ideal before a special occasion.”
